I’ve been traveling around central and eastern Europe for the past few weeks and getting my delicious fill of wiener schnitzel and goulash, but I’ve also been craving some of the Icelandic delights I had during my road trip a few weeks ago. The amazing fresh seafood and awesome lamb dishes were undeniably sumptuous, albeit a bit above my backpacker price range.
A little bit belated, here is a photo gallery of some of the “stranger” things I tried there.
- Iceland is home to the “best lamb in the world” and this traditional lamb soup was a wonderful introduction to it (at Gamli Baerinn in Hotel Reynihild).
- Another traditional dish at Gamli Baerinn, smoked arctic charr is the Icelandic answer to bagels and lox.
- An amazing lobster and pasta dish at the Borganes Settlement Center
- The first time I’ve ever tried tusk – the white fish served in this Icelandic fish and chips dish (at Icelandic Fish & Chips in Reykjavik)
- The ubiquitous skyr, which is similar to Greek yogurt but is, apparently, technically cheese.
- The Magic energy drink kept me awake during long night drives, while Pipp and Daim were lovely chocolate snacks
